What should you check before a first group meetup?
Updated · 2 min read
Before a first group meetup, confirm who is coordinating, the meeting point, time, cost and how you will get home independently. Choose a public place and a plan you can leave when you want; account verification does not guarantee a safe meetup.
What information should be clear?
- Full date, Buenos Aires time and approximate duration. “Saturday” can become confusing when a message is forwarded later.
- An exact public meeting point: entrance, corner or venue name. Avoid relying on someone else’s live location.
- Activity, group size and any preparation: comfortable clothes, advance reading or tickets.
- Cost and payment arrangements. Confirm any booking or minimum order directly with the venue.
- A coordinator and a channel for reporting delays or changes.
How do you plan your arrival and return?
Check your route before leaving and allow time to find the group. You can tell someone you trust where you are going and when you expect to return, without sharing other participants’ personal details. Bring what you need to get home independently. You do not have to accept a pickup from home or switch to a private location because the group suggests it at the last minute.
What message can you send when arriving alone?
“Hi, this is my first time joining. Are we meeting at the main entrance at 5? I will be wearing a purple jacket so you can recognise me.” Share a simple identifying detail without posting your ID, home address or unnecessary personal information. If nobody responds and you cannot confirm the place, you can decide not to go.
What can you do if something feels uncomfortable?
You do not owe a detailed explanation for leaving. “I need to go, thanks for the meetup” is enough. If someone keeps requesting personal information or pushing you to change your decision, prioritise leaving the situation. A platform’s blocking or reporting features may help with an account, but they do not replace getting in-person help when needed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to share my phone number?
No. You can coordinate in the group’s channel when one exists and decide later whether to exchange a personal contact with someone.
Does a women-only group guarantee safety?
No. The format and verification cannot guarantee behaviour. Choose a public location, keep your boundaries and arrange your own return.
What if I am running late?
Say how long you expect to take and ask whether the group is still at the agreed point. You do not need to share live location to explain a delay.
