How do you start a book club to make friends?

Updated · 2 min read

To start a book club, agree on a text everyone can access, a date and enough meeting time to talk. You do not need to be an expert or teach a class: the aim is to share reading experiences and get to know one another.

What should you read for the first meetup?

Start with something everyone can get without an unexpected compulsory expense. A short story or an agreed chapter may be easier than a long novel. Specify the edition or exact text and language. Do not share unauthorised copies of books; participants can check borrowing, buying or a source that permits reading. If someone cannot get the text yet, offer to choose another date.

How can you structure a 75-minute meeting?

  1. 15 minutes to arrive, introduce yourselves and order if meeting at a café.
  2. 40 minutes for two or three questions. Someone can facilitate turns without correcting opinions.
  3. 10 minutes to hear suggestions for the next text.
  4. 10 minutes to agree on the next date, coordinator and how changes will be communicated.

Which questions help people talk?

  • Which scene or idea stayed with you, and why?
  • Was there a character’s decision you interpreted differently?
  • Which part would you like to discuss without sharing a personal experience?
  • Would you read more by this author? What would you change for the next meetup?

Which ground rules should you agree on?

Agree on spoilers and whether someone who has not finished can attend. Avoid turning the reading into a test: nobody needs to justify not reaching the end. Offer everyone a short turn, with the option to pass, so one person does not dominate. Do not record conversations or post photos without permission. When opinions differ, return to the text rather than arguing about someone’s life.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to finish the whole book?

That depends on the group’s agreement. Specify the required reading in the first invitation so nobody has to guess what is expected.

Can I organise it in two languages?

Yes, if participants agree. Decide how speaking turns will work and whether everyone will read the same text in different translations.

Does every meeting need a coordinator?

Having someone responsible for timing and turns helps. The role can rotate and does not require judging anyone else’s interpretation.
