What should you write after meeting a new friend?

Updated · 2 min read

After meeting someone, send a short message about something you shared and suggest a specific plan. Use only a channel the other person agreed to use, and leave room for a reply, another suggestion or a no.

What message can restart the conversation?

“I enjoyed talking about books at coffee. On Saturday I am planning to visit a nearby bookshop and get a coffee afterwards. Would you like to join? No worries if it does not work for you.” Adapt it to a real conversation. Do not invent shared interests or promise a booking you have not confirmed. Suggesting something similar to the first meetup can make deciding easier.

How do you offer options without an endless poll?

Offer two times you can actually make: “Would Saturday at 5 or Tuesday at 6 work?” If neither fits, let the other person suggest something. Once agreed, summarise the date, place and duration. For a group, set a confirmation deadline and explain what happens if nobody can attend, such as postponing rather than continually changing the plan.

What if she does not reply or declines?

  • If she declines, thank her for replying. Do not ask her to justify it.
  • If she suggests another date that works, confirm it; if not, say so plainly.
  • If there is no reply, leave space. Do not seek another channel or ask others about her availability.
  • If you want to continue the activity, organise another open meetup without making that person the reason for the invitation.

How do you stay in touch without making it an obligation?

You can share a recommendation connected to your conversation or occasionally suggest meeting. There is no need to message daily or monitor reply times. If contact stays one-sided, you can reduce the frequency and keep meeting people. No number of messages guarantees a friendship.

Frequently asked questions

When should I message after the meetup?

When you want to and have something specific to say. No deadline guarantees a reply; avoid treating follow-up as a rigid rule.

Can I message privately because we are in a group?

Ask first whether that is welcome. Being in the same group does not mean agreeing to private messages or sharing a number outside it.

What if she never suggests another plan?

You can stop following up and continue your activities. You do not need a personal explanation to decide where to spend your time.
